The answer is almost always the same. The plants look right but they are ecologically wrong. Native plants and non-native ornamentals are not interchangeable, and understanding why is the single most important shift you can make as a backyard conservationist.

A non-native ornamental tree planted in the same spot might support fewer than five. Therefore, every non-native plant in your yard is a missed opportunity to support the food web that your local wildlife depends on completely.
Native Plants Support Specialist Pollinators
Many native bee species are specialists. They have evolved to collect pollen from one specific plant genus and nothing else. Additionally, without that plant they cannot reproduce, their populations decline, and the ripple effects move up the food chain to every species that depends on them.
Generalist plants like non-native ornamentals attract a narrow range of common pollinators. However, they completely fail the specialist species that are often the most ecologically important and the most vulnerable to decline. That is ecological leverage that no non-native plant can match regardless of how many you plant.
Native Plants Are Lower Maintenance Than You Think
Here is the part that surprises most people. Native plants are not difficult to grow. They evolved in your local climate, your local soil, and your local rainfall patterns. Additionally, once established they largely take care of themselves without supplemental watering, fertilizing, or pest control.
However, the first year does require some patience. Native plants spend their first season establishing deep root systems rather than producing showy above ground growth. That investment pays off quickly. Furthermore, a well established native plant can survive drought conditions that would kill a conventional ornamental outright. Therefore, switching to native plants is not just better for wildlife. It is also significantly less work over the long term. Your garden gets easier to maintain every year while simultaneously becoming more ecologically valuable.
